Chang’s Grand Courtyard [Shanxi Jinzhong]

Changjia Courtyard is located in Chewang Village, Dongyang Town, southwest of Yuci, 17.5 kilometers from Yuci. The rim is composed of four small natural villages. A large temple is built in the center of Sizhai, one half a mile away from Sizhai.

Chang Zhonglin, the ancestor of the car rim, was relocated to Taigu Hui an in the early years of Hongzhi in the Ming Dynasty. During the reign of Emperor Kangxi and Qianlong of the Qing Dynasty, the seventh ancestors often entered the business and the eighth ancestors Changwei led the IX Wanwan and Wanda. Commercial activities have made a lot of money, and Chang s has gradually become a Jinzhong Wang tribe, a strong brigade among Jin businessmen, and has begun to build residential courtyards on a large scale. Chang Wan has built a South Shrine in the vehicle village and established a Shirong Hall, with the southwest of the village as the axis, and developed to the east and south. Chang Wanda has built a North Shrine in the north of the village and established a Shihetang. Adjacent from east to west, it is built into a new street, commonly known as back street. From the Kangxi period of the Qing Dynasty to the end of the Guangxu period, after more than two hundred years of con struction, Chang s rims have been built on the rims of the north and south and east and west. The deep house courtyards on both sides of the street are row upon row, and the towers and pavilions stand side by side, and the carved beams and paintings are spectacular. A total of more than 100 acres of land, more than 40 buildings, more than 1,500 houses, making the original four natural villages into one. There is a saying: One house in Qiao s family, two streets in Chang family. The scale of the construction of Chang s house was then called the first of Sanjin residential buildings.

Chang s is unique in Confucian business culture. It has scholars, talents, talents, and noble masters of calligraphy and painting. Therefore, it also has its own unique originality in the architecture of the house. It is a Jin merchant house such as the Cao family, Qiao family, and Qu family in Jinzhong. Unmatched.

From the layout point of view, the main building is dominated by a magnificent northern courtyard. Each main courtyard is divided into the inside and the outside. The south house of the outer courtyard faces the street, and various gates are located on the east side . There are five east-west box rooms in the front yard, and another south-facing room in the north, with a vertical flower gate in the middle. The courtyard is rectangular, and the courtyard is spacious, about twice the size of the outer courtyard. The upper room and the south room are symmetric, and there are ten, nine, and eight rooms. For example, when there are eight houses in the upper house and five houses in the south house, they are separated from the courtyard according to the pattern of five to three, and never exceed the Fangzheng rule and the rank moment, which fully shows the momentum of the famous family. However, its ancillary buildings fully showed the spiritual show of the southern country garden archi tecture, so that the founder was saturated with beautiful. The beautifulness of Chang s compound is mainly displayed in three aspects.

First of all, a wooden archway is built in the middle of the courtyard of each founder s courtyard. The eaves and arches are small and exquisite. There are brick and carved walls on both sides of the archway, graceful as a gem-inlaid cable tie, so that the founder s magnificent northern courtyard adds a finishing touch to the southern country garden. This paihuahua wall divides the main courtyard into five forms: five inside, five outside, four inside, and three outside. There are unique styles .

Secondly, between the courtyards and after the courtyards, most of them have gardens and vegetable gardens, and there are small gates that communicate with the main courtyard. After entering the garden, there are gangways running through it, winding and tortuously embellishing the corridors, pavilions, small bridges and flowing water, or grass and stone farmhouses, or exotic flowers, unique ingenuity, like the southern garden.

Thirdly, the painted art of brick, wood, stone, and wood components visible in each courtyard is unique. The art of brick carving is expressed in four aspects: first, the kiss of the ridge of the room, the beast, and the carved spine, which are beautiful in shape, skilled in lines, and exquisite in cutting techniques; all are fine brick carvings of the Qing Dynasty; The traditional Bai Shou Map, Auspicious Map and the story of Buddhism and Taoism, as well as flowers and birds and dried, fresh fruit and other brick art with strong local characteristics; the third is the hard gable at the top of each row of houses Head or flowers, or birds, or beasts, or characters, paired in pairs, but rarely identical, have their own unique shapes. The fourth is the existing part of the brick guardrail. On the floor guardrail of Guihetang, all are made of brick. The pattern is composed of Fu, Shou, Xi, Lu, Dong, Xiangtuanhua and gossip furnace, hanging pot, four treasures of the study, etc. The railings and slabs are integrated as if they were made naturally, and there are no seams at all. No matter the art of carving or the art of building, it can be called the superior craftsmanship in Qing Dynasty architecture. The other part is in Yanghetang , which is well-preserved, but the art of carving techniques is inferior to the former.

The stone carving arts of the Chang Family Courtyard includes guardrails, door beasts, and retaining walls. Most of them are carved with fine sandstone and carved with various patterns. The roughness of sand and gravel, and the exquisite carving work, stand out from each other.

The woodcarvings of the Chang s compound are mainly woodcarvings of windows, door frames, screens, furniture, and partition woodcarvings in the house. The patterns are ever-changing, the modeling methods are different, and the wood is diverse. It is just like the woodcarving exhibition, which makes visitors confused. It is a pity that wood is not easy to preserve and the damage is very serious. Chang s Courtyard is the representative of Confucian architecture, and the interior layout is very particular. Everywhere, it Reflects the steadiness, simplicity, and symmetry of Shuxiang Mendi. The indoor piano, calligraphy and painting, the four treasures of the study, the strange flowers and bonsai, are different from other Jinshang Houses. As a Confucian merchant house, it has its own uniqueness and refreshing.

After more than 300 years of vicissitudes, the degree of damage to the Chang s compound is very large. In view of the need to develop Jinzhong s commercial cultural tourism, the government is planning to gradually restore the original appearance of the ancient buildings and carry out indoor display market according to the characteristics of Confucian businessmen, adding a unique bright pearl to Jinshang cultural tourism.
